Overview of the scheme
Spur Road roundabout is where traffic crosses from the main north to south London Road and the busy east to west Southampton Road/Havant Road. The roundabout is often congested, delaying journeys on this key route, which is particularly important for accessing QA hospital.
The proposals here will benefit all road users:
- Making it easier to cross the busy road
- Contribute to shorter bus journey times
- Creating safer spaces for people to walk and cycle

What is proposed and why
Better bus journeys
We need to change the layout of the area surrounding the Spur Road roundabout to enable buses to travel through the area with ease and without getting caught in congestion.
This is a popular route for buses travelling to and from Portsmouth city centre, QA hospital, Fareham, Havant and Waterlooville. These proposals will improve journey times for thousands of bus passengers.
Safer walking and cycling
The proposed footway, which will be separated from a new cycle lane, will allow for safer travel on this key route used to access local schools, housing, health care services and employment sites. The proposal also supports Portsmouth City Council’s development of Edinburgh House in Cosham – 60 brand new self-contained apartments for those living with dementia, the relocation of Cosham Health Centre and the new Cosham Fire Station.
Our proposals will:
- Deliver bus priority measures at Sundridge Close and Spur Road, enabling faster and more reliable bus journey times
- Replace the existing pedestrian subway at Sundridge Close with a more accessible crossing
- Revise the line marking approaching the roundabout to better manage the traffic flow and improve safety
- Improve the footpath and cycle lane at Southampton Road
Have your say
All proposals are subject to consultation. We asked for your views on what we’re proposing in a survey, but this closed on Sunday 5 September 2021. We’ll use feedback received to shape these plans to make them work for everyone.
You can now view the results of this consultation at our Your City, Your Say website.
We held some briefing sessions for these proposals in August 2021. Please contact us if you’d like to receive recordings of these briefing sessions for Spur Road Roundabout.
Next steps
The feedback we receive from our survey will help us to finalise designs, before undertaking a statutory 21-day consultation. We’ll update this page with further information and detailed designs as this scheme progresses to the next stage.
Although surveys are now closed on these schemes, we’d encourage you to sign up to our SEHRT community panel so that you can be informed about future developments for these sites, as well as future surveys about proposed developments in Portsmouth and across South East Hampshire.
